Study ladder is really taking off. These children have been working hard and achieved certificates.

Well done Lucy, Maryam, Jupi, Charlotte, Aoife (2 certificates), Unathi.

Last Cultural Box

We managed to slip Summer's presentation of her Cultural Box in this week.
She showed us some marvellous Kiwiana.
Her big smile in the photo below says it all. Well done Summer.

Wow! I just continue to be impressed with the wonderful items and explanations of these items that children have been showing in their Cultural Boxes.
Apologies to Summer - so many things happening we haven't heard yours yet. Let's aim for tomorrow.

Cultural Box Reflections

These are the comments from the children about how they felt about preparing and presenting their cultural boxes.

  • we felt proud of our culture
  • we liked sharing about our special things
  • we were very nervous but felt proud when we finished
  • we were excited
  • it felt scary to stand up and speak in front of the class
  • we were happy
  • we felt shy
  • we felt happy and nervous at the same time

Cultural Boxes.

It has been so exciting being an audience to interesting and a variety of different cultural items. Our biggest challenge at the moment is the voice volume of the presentations. It can be very nerve wracking to stand and share in front of others. This is a good start and an area we will work on all year.
I wonder if you can guess the countries being discussed?

Yashu is from Nepal

Science in a Van
On Thursday we had a wonderful time making scientific observations and predictions. Some was to do with bubbles, mixing.... and a whole lot of fun!!!!

blowing bubbles

I was so fascinated by the expressions on the children's faces.
More photos to come of the event itself.

Our Unathi was part of the display where she held a bubble
which was filled with dry ice. Absolutely incredible.

Room 9 Mihi
A mihi is a personal introduction to others (usually in Maori but can incorporate other languages too).
We have been working on our own Mihi, even Mrs Hinman has been writing hers.
We will put these in a book so that we can practice sharing them at school as part of our Maori and oral language programme. A copy will also come home for some practice. Your listening and appreciative ears would be fabulous.

Cultural Box

Today we had our first cultural box presentations.
Lucy, Ira and Sibgha presented and explained 5 items of cultural significance to them.
Fabulous job girls. I know I learned some interesting things as did the rest of the class.

The children are learning to be good speakers and listeners.
Not only do the speakers need to show...
  • good volume
  • good eye contact with the audience
  • speak clearly at an appropriate pace (not too fast ad not too slow)
  • speak about interesting things
... but the audience also needs to show good listening skills by
  • looking at the speaker
  • showing 5 (ask your child what this means)
  • and asking relevant questions and giving suitable comments.

Wow - we are learning so much during our oral language tasks.

I can't wait to see and hear more cultural box presentations.
